Thyme
Thyme, when grown in its warm native Mediterranean climate, need only a single planting to enjoy it year-round for many years. It is an evergreen perennial. It can be planted and harvested annually in more seasonally sensitive areas, or it can be carried indoors for year-round access or grown in a greenhouse.
It’s related to familiar herbs like oregano, basil, and, of course, mint because it belongs to the mint family. Its flavor is different from that of its cousins, though. It even has a distinct appearance. Edible Thymus vulgaris is identified by its small, rounded green leaves that typically grow in clusters on woody stems, whereas lemon thyme is identified by its smell.
